Influence, Lame Buzzword or Qualitative Metric?
On the inaugural launch of the Measure Mobcast we have a spirited discussion on “Influence”. It seems like almost daily there is another tool launching to put a dollar value on our Twitter profile or measure our so called “Influence” in the social media channels. Whether you think influence is the latest and greatest metric or whether you think its a hoax I have no doubt you’ll get a lot from this discussion. Please feel free to send us any comments or feedback you might have. We’re always looking to make the show better. We’ll have the show up and available on iTunes in a jiffy!
On Todays Podcast:

I love the idea of calling it “potential influence”- less of a misnomer. Because, let’s face it, TRUE influence is not going to be accurately quantifiable in most cases. That isn’t to say it isn’t important to measure, but let’s call it what it is.
To Jason’s point at about 8:30-9:00- the problem is we can’t follow every facebook page, every tweeter, all the time. Is there a way for someone with an analyst-geared mind to figure out who has the most potential for a beneficial relationship?
I think the big thing that is lacking from twitter analysis is segmentation capabilities. Just like my traditional #measure reports, measuring true success and figuring out how to make the data useful lies in segmenting your users (or followers).
If my twitter analysis tool could segment #measure users by “content creators”, “employers”, “vendors”, “movers-and-shakers”… the data would be so much more valuable. Obviously there are technical limitations behind this (who defines the segments?) but… I can see that being a direction to move towards for the future.
